Dionne – A COMPANY of N3RDS

Art is my passion. Passion is power.

My name is Dionne, we are  A COMPANY of N3RDS and I like to art.  Art is a transformative and timeless tool of power, love and expression.

I’ve loved Disney’s animated movies for as far back as I can remember. From Pinocchio and Alice in Wonderland to the Lion King and Finding Nemo, they’re all my favorites for different reasons. The movie Fantasia not only opened my mind to beautiful classical music but also the beauty in pairing sound with visual art. It was like seeing magic for the first time.

I used to read comic strips like Life in Hell by Matt Groening and Garfield by Jim Davis. My bedroom walls were covered with cutouts of these strips. I would draw these characters all day. So not only was my reading proficiency increased via accessing these pieces of art, my level of sarcasm for a child that age was off the scale.

Like many Black kids growing up in Baltimore, watching cartoons such as Smurfs, Bugs Bunny, X-Men and TMNT were a way of life. For young people in the inner city, these programs became part of our culture. Even as a small ingredient, they were baked into our everyday lives. Still today, I can be talking with my husband, my siblings or friends and one of us will start the Thundercats chant. And you and I know once the call begins we all finish it out. “Thunder, thunder, thunder Thundercats hoooooo!”

As a shy and introverted kid, most of my time was spent drawing from comic books that  my brothers turned me onto such as X-Men, Transformers and other Marvel and DC books. So when anyone was looking for Dionne they would usually find me drawing from comic strips, comic books and cereal boxes.

As I progressed in life, my passion for art grew. My interests and creativity led me to web design and graphic art. Eventually I would enroll in the International Academy of Design and Technology (IADT).

Artistically and intellectually I became interested in artists such as Salvador Dalí, Andy Warhol and of course Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Basquiat’s life and his expression of suggestive dichotomies helped me understand the power of art. We as artists have the power to manifest magic, transform and mold minds. We do more than accessorize spaces and add aesthetic qualities and characteristics. We create culture. We are culture. With all that said, my name is Dionne we are A COMPANY of NERDS and I like to art.

Fight evil. Kick Ass.

Thank you,
